Following on from the UEA Central Library, this project also involved the extension of an iconic brutalist building by Sir Denys Lasdun. The IOE campus is located in the heart of the Bloomsbury Conservation Area in central London and the site for this project is bounded on one side by Grade II* listed brutalist concrete buildings and on the other by Grade II listed Georgian terraces. Planning permission in this challenging location was refused first time round but IOE went to appeal in 2009 and permission was granted following a planning inquiry. SEH worked with IOE to carry out preliminary work in 2012 to secure the permission “in perpetuity” and with new owners, UCL, to get approval for amendments in 2015. I put together the interview team that secured the project for SEH in 2006 and led the project throughout, including acting as expert witness at the planning inquiry. The project is not yet built but still could be!
