This project for the University of Liverpool created an expanded and modernised library by refurbishing two existing buildings, linking the two together with a new extension and providing a new landscaped plaza to provide a unified setting. The two existing buildings are both notable examples of 20th century architecture: the original Sydney Jones Library by Basil Spence (1974) and the adjacent Senate House by Tom Mellor (1968). This was a wonderfully complex project from a technical point of view, involving multiple phases of work, asbestos removals, strengthening the existing structure, multiple library stock relocations and new landscaping, all with the library kept in use throughout. I was fully involved throughout, first as Project Associate and then as Project Director from concept design stages to completion of final handovers in 2009.
